Carlow
Town
Ceatharlach in Irish, meaning "four-part lake" is an
inland town in the centre of the south-east of Ireland in County
Carlow, 84 km from Dublin. The River Barrow flows through the
town which numbers about 20,000 people - 3,000 of whom are students.
The Carlow area has been settled for thousands of years so historically
has an impressive pedigree. St Mullins monastery is believed to
have been established in the vicinity in the 7th century while
the year 1180 saw the construction of Carlow Castle by William
the Marshall, Earl of Pembroke and Lord of Leinster to guard the
vital river crossing.
Today: In modern times, Carlow
town is a thriving market and industrial centre boasting a celebrated
arts and crafts community allied to a rich tradition of Irish
language and culture. A youthful town, Carlow’s large
student population stems from the local Institute of Technology,
St Patricks College and the Institute of Further Education.
In addition to these important influences, Carlow offers an
extensive and impressive range of shops, boutiques, restaurants
and of course, pubs!
